The Local Cultural Council Program

The Local Cultural Council Program, the second largest grant program of the Massachusetts Cultural Council, is a grassroots complement to the agency's centralized grant programs. Allocations are made to all of Massachusetts' 351 cities and towns to support community cultural activities. Each year, the MCC distributes funds to LCCs; in turn, LCCs make grants to schools, organizations and individuals in their communities. Distributions to each LCC are based on a local aid formula devised by the state. The formula takes into account population and the tax base. Since funding began in 1984, the Mass Cultural Council has awarded $147,000 to Westport, enabling funding for about 320 programs. The Westport allocation for 2007-2008 is $4000.

The Helen Ellis Charitable Trust

Helen Ellis, an artist and a dedicated educator, was a resident of Westport for over 50 years. After she died, the proceeds of her estate were used to establish the Helen Ellis Charitable Trust. The Trust supports Ms. Ellis’ dream of inspiring others to develop their creative talents.

Administered by the Bank of America, the Trust provides funding for the Westport Cultural Council to make awards for projects that benefit Westport residents. Funding from Helen Ellis Charitable Trust to Westport began in 1992. Since then, the Westport Cultural Council has awarded over $195,000 for 182 arts and cultural programs that benefit Westport residents.
